The National University of Singapore has a team of researchers who have been working on developing new battery-powered devices for wearable devices. They presented a new invention at the 2015 IEEE MEMS International Conference held last week, one that can be applied to the skin. The sticker on the top can power the wearable device by collecting energy such as static electricity or friction generated by the body.
The team demonstrated the use of fingers on the forearms and throat of the person. The team found that the electrical energy collected by the action of the fist and the fist can generate 7.3 and 7.5 volts respectively. Even when you tap with your finger, you can even generate more than 90 volts of energy to drive a commercial LED tube. The team plans to develop devices that are more flexible and lighter and that collect more body-related energy. Body temperature, body movements, and even ambient light can power wearables.
