According to the American Association of Machine Tool Distributors (AMTDA) and the American Manufacturing Technology Association (AMT), in January 2009, US machine tool consumption was US$94.95 million, a decrease of 59.2% from December 2008, compared with January 2008. The $338 million fell by 71.9%.
In terms of product categories, the consumption of metal cutting machine tools in January 2009 was US$ 84.57 million, down 72.7% year-on-year. The consumption of metal forming and manufacturing machine tools was US$ 10.38 million, down 69.7% year-on-year.
AMTDA Chairman Peter Borden said that this consumption data is the lowest since 1996, and it is not yet possible to predict whether there will be a bottoming out in 2009.
