On July 29th, Beijing time, scientists developed a new material that could be assembled into an "army" to form a unit of combat. The material consists of a collection of spheres that, when exposed to an electric field, can be automatically arranged and combined into a pattern. In the future we may be able to use this material to create a robot army that is fearless and uniform. The research was conducted by a team of scientists from the UNIST National Institute of Technology in Ulsan, Korea. Researchers are from all over the world.
This means that some particles will repel each other, some will suck each other, and some will remain neutral. In this way, the balls are automatically combined into a shape, such as a chain, a big ball, or clustered.
So far, researchers have only tested it with a computer model and a simple two-dimensional Genus colloidal system. Researchers hope to develop a three-dimensional prototype of the material as soon as possible in order to study the practical use of the material.
They were inspired by the group behavior of bees and ants and conducted this study.
They used computer models in the laboratory to try to replicate this behavior in animals and designed the new material for the first time.
They created a pile of self-propelled balls called Janus colloids (Janus is a mythical two-sided god). When the balls are exposed to an electric field, they can be automatically arranged in a variety of shapes.
The researchers were led by Dr Erik Luijten of Northwestern University. They wrote in the paper: "Jenus colloid is a particle composed of two different hemispheres. It is a typical synthetic material. Because of their broken symmetry, they have the ability to promote themselves."
The two sides of the Genas colloid have different properties, with positive charges on one side and negative charges on the other side.
Under the effect of "broken symmetry", when the colloid is exposed to an electric field, the charge carried by the particles will change, resulting in electrostatic interaction between different colloids.
The research team believes that this material can be used in the future to more accurately deliver drugs to designated sites in the human body. One can put the medicine in a sphere and then the spheres combine themselves in the body where it is needed.
However, this material may also be used to create robots that are automatically formed. Although they exist in the form of a single machine, they act in uniform and even become an army.
