The research team of the Joint Research Center for Energy Storage Research (JCESR) has developed a device that can visualize the charge-discharge cycle of high-magnification Li-ion batteries, enabling people to understand the working principle of lithium-ion batteries from the atomic level. The device is called Operan Electrochemical Stage, an operating-electrochemical observation stage, and provides nano-resolution images for charging and discharging of lithium batteries through the most advanced electron microscope. It can help scientists develop new battery technologies and break the bottleneck that restricts the development of lithium battery technology.
Scientists can use this device to better control performance and safety when developing new battery technologies. At the same time, the visualization of the processes that take place between the anode and the electrolyte allows scientists to quickly test and judge new battery technologies. Specifically, this technology gives scientists the ability to directly observe the presence or absence of crystalline dendrites in lithium ions. This dendritic structure created by lithium ions is a bottleneck that restricts the development of lithium battery technology. When this kind of crystalline dendrites appear, gradually growing over time will cause a short circuit. Scientists spent decades trying to develop technologies to eliminate crystalline dendrites.
