First, they created a special molecule containing metal atoms (especially iron) called DFSO+, and then they would inject DFSO+ into a bacteria called Shewanella oneidensis. Finally, this synthetic molecule reacts with bacteria as it passes through the cell membrane, during which it generates electricity through iron atoms.

Although some Shewanella strains have their own power generation capacity, these strains can only survive under anaerobic conditions, so their application is very limited. Now, researchers have found a way to get rid of this limit and the DFSO+ that they use can survive in bacteria for weeks.

This technology is only a very preliminary result. Bacteria still cannot produce enough power to be put into practical applications. However, once it can be further developed, it will inevitably have great prospects.
