Qualcomm Shows Halo Wireless Charging Technology

When it comes to Qualcomm, what do you think of, Qualcomm mobile processors, Qualcomm communications chips, and Qualcomm Qi wireless charging technology, right? Other people's car wireless charging technology is also flashing.

However, as more and more smart technologies are added to cars, many technology companies have also started to engage in automotive products, including Apple, Google, Nvidia, and now Qualcomm.

Apple and Google mainly bring the on-board system to the car, while Nvidia mainly focuses on the chip, and Qualcomm has to provide wireless charging technology for the car. Of course, we are referring to electric cars, such as Tesla.

However, Tesla's willingness to use Qualcomm's wireless charging technology is one thing, because Tesla also has a very fast charger, although not a wireless charger.

According to reports, Tesla is developing a fully automatic car charger that will charge the car like a metal snake. When the Model S car approaches the serpentine charger, the car will automatically open the hatch of the charging socket, and then the automatic charger will automatically complete the docking work and start charging in about 30 seconds. The 30 seconds here is only the completion of the docking work, not the time when the charging is completed. It is not yet clear how long it takes to fully charge.

In terms of wireless charging technology, Qualcomm is actually far more familiar than other companies because many smart phones support Qualcomm's Qi wireless charging technology.

Now that Qualcomm is no longer content to provide wireless technology support for mobile devices, Qualcomm will provide wireless charging support for electric vehicles.

Recently, the second Formula E event again took place in Beijing. Qualcomm released the second generation of Halo wireless charging technology in this event. It also supports wireless charging while driving, and the charging speed is twice as fast as before. .

It is understood that Qualcomm's Halo wireless charging technology was applied last year to the International Automobile Federation’s Formula E racing pilots (BMW i8) and medical vehicles (BMW i3).

The Halo wireless charging technology utilizes the magnetic resonance effect to non-contactly charge a power battery pack of an electric or hybrid vehicle without using a conventional cable. When charging is needed, the owner only needs to park the vehicle above the Halo's charging pad.

The current application of Halo technology is mainly static charging, in addition to semi-static charging and dynamic charging technology. Semi-static means that the car can be charged when the car is very slow, such as when waiting for a red light, or waiting at a taxi airport, and the speed is very slow. Dynamic charging is the ultimate goal, meaning that you can charge at high speeds. This is why, in the Formula E competition, the receiving boards on both sides of the track can be charged at the moment when the electric vehicle is galloping.

Qualcom’s new Halo wireless charging technology uses a 7.2kW wireless charging system. Compared to the previous Formula E wireless charging technology, it can reduce the charging time by half. The previous generation charging power was 3.6kW. The new wireless charging technology makes the car Charging is completed within one hour, which is almost equivalent to cable charging efficiency.
