Nuggets ASEAN hardware and machinery products become "export a brother"

A year after the establishment of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area, Yunnan’s trade volume with ASEAN has continued to rise. Agricultural products have always been Yunnan's "export big" to ASEAN and even the whole world. Over the years, it has occupied the top spot in Yunnan's total export volume. However, in 2010, a dark horse rushed out and overtook agricultural products as the "first" for Yunnan's exports. This is the province's mechanical and electrical products. In the first three quarters of 2010, Yunnan's exports of various types of mechanical and electrical products earned US$1.384 billion, which represented a growth of 1.5 times over the same period of the previous year, and accounted for 23.4% of the province’s total exports, making it the largest export product in the province.

Bilateral tariffs are curtailed year by year In February 2010, a group of hydropower equipment exporting enterprises in Kunming, worth more than 200,000 yuan, were shipped from the Mogao port and exported to Thailand. Thailand imposes a tariff of 2.60% on mechanical and electrical products from China, and in 2009 exports to Thailand are subject to a tariff of 4.98 per cent, while exports of the same products in 2010 can be reduced by nearly 5,000 yuan.

Since the completion of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area in 2010, China and ASEAN countries have reduced their tariffs to a large extent within each other. Although the tax rate of mechanical and electrical products is still relatively high compared with the zero-tariffs of agricultural products such as fruits and vegetables, the vertical comparison shows that the tax rate for exports of electromechanical products to ASEAN has been greatly reduced compared with previous years. In Thailand, for example, tariffs were still 9.28% in 2007 and 2.60% in 2010. The tax rates of the ASEAN countries such as the Philippines, Indonesia, and Myanmar are also falling drastically. According to the agreements between China and ASEAN countries, by 2018, the tax rates of most Chinese countries on Chinese mechanical and electrical products will fall below 2.0%.

Taking this opportunity, in 2009, our province invested in a national-level port city of Ruili with a total investment of 300 million yuan and a total construction area of 120,000 square meters. The completion of the standardized and international large-scale hardware and electromechanical city in Yunnan Province's first border port has played an irreplaceable role in Yunnan's electromechanical products docking with ASEAN and South Asia. Yunnan hopes that this electromechanical city will become a model and build an internationalized professional brand market oriented to Southeast Asia and South Asia. Immediately afterwards, Yunnan will also plan to construct the hardware and electromechanical branch of the electromechanical city in Dali, Tengchong, Yingjiang, Wenshan Tianbao, and the Red River estuary.

In order to adapt to the construction of China-ASEAN Free Trade Area and the requirements of South China and other international markets for China’s hardware and electromechanical products and brand quality requirements, the “channel advantage” has been transformed into “economic advantages”. The Yunnan Hardware and Electrical Machinery Industry Association and other relevant organizations have passed the 2009 China Vietnam The International Trade and Tourism Trade Fair, the 17th Kunming Import and Export Commodity Fair and the 2nd South Asia Commodity Fair, and the Ruili China-Burma Border Trade Fair will promote the Chinese hardware and electromechanical products to ASEAN countries. In addition, the Yunnan Hardware and Electrical Machinery Association actively provided a bridge between the government and enterprises and gave full play to the platform of the chamber of commerce. The delegation visited government, enterprises and chambers of commerce in Mandalay, Myanmar, Lao Cai Province, Viet Nam, Da Nang, Vietnam, and Thailand. Countries such as Myanmar and Vietnam reached a series of project cooperation intentions such as solar energy, photovoltaic lighting, agricultural machinery assembly plant, cable television network construction, engine plant construction, and construction of a logistics base, and reached an agreement with Laojie Provincial Government of Vietnam in Lao Cai in 2010. The cooperation intention of the special exhibition of “China Hardware&Mechanical BrandName” was signed with Vietnam Laojie Trade and Investment Promotion Center.

ASEAN became the largest market for electromechanical exports in Yunnan In 2010, the province’s exports of electromechanical products reached 1,361, an increase of 64 over the same period in 2009. Among them, the rapid growth of exports of metal products, to achieve foreign exchange earned 546 million US dollars, an increase of 3.5 times year-on-year, in the province's exports of all types of mechanical and electrical products ranked first. The export market for electromechanical products in the province expanded from 141 countries and regions in the same period last year to 190. Among them, ASEAN is the largest export market, with exports to ASEAN at US$535 million, an increase of 45.4% year-on-year.

Among all the mechanical and electrical products export enterprises in the province, Yunnan Tin Co., Ltd. ranked first in terms of export value. In the first half of 2010, the group's exports amounted to US$84.88 million, an increase of 250.6%. Yunnan Machinery Import & Export Co., Ltd. exported US$43.38 million, an increase of 30.9%.

Since the establishment of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area, relevant departments in Yunnan Province have endeavored to help enterprises with electromechanical products make good use of their policies, expand exports, increase the core competitiveness of export machinery and electronic products and product quality, and actively guide electromechanical products companies to “go global” and expand internationally. The market, especially the ASEAN countries, has become the most important and most dynamic market for Yunnan's foreign trade in mechanical and electrical products. ASEAN countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand have all become major markets for the export of electromechanical products in Yunnan, and Yunnan’s geopolitical advantages have been fully demonstrated and reflected.

It is understood that the main reasons for the higher growth in the import and export of electromechanical and electronic products, apart from the export of electromechanical products led by the project, but also the economic complementarity between the economies of these countries and China, mainly because of the surrounding countries' export oriented markets for electromechanical products. Very strong, the corresponding market demand is very large. Therefore, from the mechanical products exported from Yunnan, the market demand for agricultural machinery, hardware, construction machinery, containers, railway locomotives and other products in the ASEAN countries will continue to expand accordingly.

Ensuring Expansion of the ASEAN Market After the completion of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area, not only Yunnan, but also the country’s electromechanical products have experienced rapid growth in exports. Recently, Zhang Yijing, president of the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products, predicted at the press conference of the “2010 China Electrical and Mechanical Commerce Association Recommended Export Brands” that the export value of China’s machinery and electronic products will reach US$940 billion in 2010, an increase of approximately 30% year-on-year. China is expected to become the world’s largest exporter of electromechanical products.

At the same time, the traffic between China and ASEAN countries has also become more open. In addition to the existing large highway access, the high-speed rail from Kunming to Laos has been approved, is being planned for implementation, and will be extended to Singapore in the future. The access to transportation will inevitably bring about more new markets, and electromechanical products will also face new opportunities. Many companies in Yunnan have already placed their eyes on the future market. The relevant person in charge of Kunming Motor Factory stated that the company has placed the next step in market expansion in Laos. Laos has a weak industrial base and needs a lot of basic equipment in economic development, which has great market potential. The hydroelectric equipment and motor products of Kunming Electric Machinery Factory are all required for the construction of ASEAN countries such as Laos. After the completion of the high-speed rail, it can also open up many markets such as Malaysia and Indonesia.

Yunnan's electromechanical companies are also actively cooperating to develop the ASEAN market with overall strength. In order to turn the advantages of the channel into an economic advantage, the Yunnan Hardware and Electrical Machinery Association has organized members to hold delegations to ASEAN to participate in the promotion meeting, and has reached solar energy, photovoltaic lighting, agricultural machinery assembly plants, and cable TV with Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam and other countries. Network construction, construction of engine factories, construction of logistics bases and a series of project cooperation intentions.

And Yunnan as a bridgehead facing ASEAN will put the main direction of market development. According to the person in charge of Kunming Motor Factory, the intuitive feeling is that the entry and exit are smoother, and the flow of people is increasing. There will be almost no obstacles to the ASEAN countries. Kunming Motor Factory's export business mainly focuses on hydropower equipment and motors. “In the past, the export of hydropower equipment, the ASEAN market is mainly concentrated in Vietnam, last year's exports to Myanmar, Thailand have increased a lot, especially the Thai market is large, there will be gradually replacing Vietnam to become the main ASEAN market.”

Challenges and Opportunities Coexisting New opportunities are often accompanied by new challenges. The completion of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area has brought opportunities to Yunnan, but it is also facing challenges from other provinces, regions and cities in China. In the past, the geographic advantage of Yunnan was obvious. However, with the introduction of a series of policies such as “zero tariff” and channel construction, more domestic enterprises have participated in the ASEAN market. In addition to taking advantage of geopolitical advantages, Yunnan's enterprises must rely more on improving product quality.

The Pearl River Delta is China's manufacturing center, but with the increase in the cost of land and labor, many companies have also placed their sights on ASEAN countries where the land, labor, and sales markets have advantages. Midea Group has set up production and processing bases in Vietnam and Thailand. Foshan also encourages local companies to adopt the "trading first, investing and following up" strategy, and select countries such as Thailand and Vietnam, which have relatively weak economies, and have the advantage of cheap labor and natural resources. Target sites for overseas processing. Encourage and guide the traditional advantageous industries such as home appliances and building materials to go global and drive the export of technology, products and services. Many enterprises in Guangdong, Guangxi and even Jiangsu and Zhejiang also have a place in the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area. These have become new challenges that Yunnan has to face. Yunnan motor products have always had strong advantages in Myanmar, but in recent years, mechanical and electrical products in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces have also entered the Myanmar market, and industry associations have also been established in the region. The prices have obvious advantages. Yunnan’s motor market share in Myanmar is constantly increasing. Zoom out.
