New plastics that repair cracks and holes

The team used a mixed gel-like chemical called "vascular delivery" and filled the interior of the plastic with tiny pipes. These chemicals continue to flow inside the material, just like the human blood. When the plastic breaks, the two gel materials will rapidly flow out and mix together, and will quickly harden under the action of air to achieve the purpose of repair, and maintain the integrity of the plastic structure.

"We must consider factors other than renewable, such as gravity," Professor White said. "The active fluids we use are gelled very quickly, and they start to harden after they are released. If it isn't repaired, the fluid in the damaged area will flow back, just like humans will bleed. It will remain in place until the gel is formed." "For the first time, we demonstrated renewable materials that are repaired by polymers. This is the key," Professor White said. "Before this success, if a piece of plastic breaks, it can only be thrown away. Now through our experiments it has been proved that this kind of self-healing technology can be used to recover."
