Researchers at the National University of Singapore (NUS) have designed and built a circuit board that can achieve speeds up to 245 THz. This speed is tens of thousands faster than that of modern microprocessors. The research results will promote the design of new circuits.
When light comes into contact with certain metals, it can produce many electrons with extremely fast vibrations, ie ions. We can use this phenomenon to build ultra-fast computers and other equipment. However, this phenomenon occurs at a very slight level, so that we cannot use the instrument to study, let alone use this phenomenon.
NUS researchers found a way to use this phenomenon. The research team constructed a molecular-level circuit board containing two ion generators (devices that convert photons into examples). Between the two ionizers is a layer of molecules with a thickness of only 0.5 nanometers.
Using electron microscope observations, the scientists discovered that this layer of molecules can move ions back and forth, allowing the system to generate frequencies up to 24 THz. By changing the molecular layer material, scientists can also control the frequency of the system.
This latest research result has been published in the latest issue of the scientific journal.
