Japan develops carbon nano-molecules that are curved like saddles

Following the spherical fullerenes, tubular carbon nanotubes and flake-shaped graphene, the carbon nanomaterial family has a new member. Japanese researchers have developed carbon nano-molecules that are curved like saddles and are expected to find applications in electronic components and medical applications.

The research team led by Professor Ieya Kenji of Nagoya University reported the results on the 15th edition of the journal Nature and Chemistry magazine. They named this carbon nanomolecule as "bent nanographene".

The research team uses the hexagonal molecule formed of six carbon atoms as the basic unit and uses the "cross-coupling" method to bind different molecules together. However, if only hexagonal molecules are used, only graphene can be formed. For this reason, researchers have added pentagonal and heptagonal carbon molecules between the hexagonal molecules to form a curved structure.

The new material is 0.6 nm high and 1.3 nm wide and yellow. Because there are a lot of tiny spaces between carbon molecules, they are easily dissolved in organic solvents such as ethanol and are easily applied to electronic substrates. They are expected to be used in the manufacture of solar cells and electronic components.

If a solution containing this novel carbon nanomolecule is irradiated with ultraviolet light, the molecule can emit green fluorescence, so it is also expected to be used in the field of bioimaging. (Reporter Lan Jianzhong)
