On April 20th, China's fourth-generation advanced nuclear power technology has made positive progress in the industrialization of high-temperature gas-cooled reactors. The reporter learned from China Nuclear Industry Construction Corporation on the 20th that the preliminary feasibility study report of the commercial 600,000 kW high temperature reactor Jiangxi Ruijin nuclear power project has passed expert review and is expected to become the world's first commercial fourth generation nuclear power plant.

China's high-temperature reactor technology research and development began in the 1970s, Tsinghua University designed and built a 10 MW experimental reactor through the implementation of the National 863 Program. Since 2003, China's nuclear construction and Tsinghua University have jointly promoted the industrialization of high-temperature reactor technology, and the high-temperature reactor technology has continued to mature from experimental reactor technology. In 2012, the Shidaowan high-temperature reactor demonstration project in Rongcheng City, Shandong Province started construction, and it is planned to build electricity by the end of 2017.

Wang Shoujun, chairman and party secretary of China Nuclear Construction, said that as the fourth generation of nuclear power technology, the most important feature of high temperature reactors is their inherent safety. Under any circumstance, there is no core melting accident and a large number of radioactive release accidents in the high temperature reactor, which will not affect human health and the environment.

According to reports, the inherent safety of high temperature reactors is due to the design of fuel elements with high temperature resistance, high temperature ceramic core design, passive safety system design, etc. Under any working conditions, including loss of all cooling, The reactor can be kept safe by any artificial and machine intervention. The inherent safety of the high temperature reactor has been verified through long-term operational testing of the experimental reactor.

High temperature reactor technology is an advanced nuclear energy technology with China's completely independent intellectual property rights. After basic research, experimental reactor construction, and demonstration reactor construction, China has systematically mastered all the technologies of high temperature reactors, and more than 95% of high temperature reactors can be localized. "With its completely independent intellectual property rights, high localization rate of equipment and inherent safety advantages, high temperature reactors have become one of the preferred reactor types for implementing China's nuclear power outbound strategy." Wang Shoujun said.

He said that in the next step, China's nuclear construction will jointly submit a project proposal to Jiangxi Province to the National Development and Reform Commission, and apply for the inclusion of the Jiangxi Ruijin high-temperature reactor nuclear power project in the national nuclear power plan. The project will then carry out feasibility study work, and the project land acquisition and auxiliary facilities construction will also be carried out simultaneously. After obtaining the relevant license, the 2 units of the first phase of the Jiangxi Ruijin High-temperature Reactor Nuclear Power Project are scheduled to start in 2017, and in 2021, the first unit will be connected to the grid for power generation.

According to reports, China's nuclear construction has carried out preliminary work on high temperature reactor projects in Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangdong, Fujian, Shandong, Hubei, Zhejiang and other provinces and cities. At the same time, it is actively promoting the promotion of commercial high temperature reactor technology to countries and regions such as Dubai, Saudi Arabia and South Africa.
